Here's the email I sent to my friends and family:
We've received lots of questions about our safety since news of the London riots is obviously getting lots of global attention. Most of you know this, but we are safe. I've also received a few accusations that somehow my arival in London has somehow sparked the riots and I would like to say that the two events are in no way connected.
We're about as far away from the riots as you can get and still be in London - which is a pretty big city. Basically the riots started in NE London (Tottenham) and have spread through most of East London, but we're in SW London (Chiswick). And while the looting and danger to police is serious, the violence against citizens has been pretty non-existent (remember they don't have guns here). Most of the looters are just frustrated, opportunistic, inner-city, youth (with some low life adults thrown in). It's sad that human greed is what it is, and many of these kids feel this is their only recourse, but it's not the race-angry, gun toting, mobs we sometimes see in places like LA.
So to our parents, never fear, your grandchildren are safe and happy. In fact they spent most of the day at the Tower of London yesterday attending Knight School, where they learned how to wield a sword and Jen got to fire a trebuchet. I'm hoping this comes in handy if the looting does reach us.
Cheers,
Tac
