Xzavier the writer.

He carries around a small messenger style bag he made out of duct tape filled with writing paper and pens. After he finished his burrito he pulled out his paper and started writing. I couldn't be prouder, on all accounts.

Yoda Goes to the Bellevue Mall

You may recall that a few weeks ago my Lego Yoda minifig was kidnapped. My coworker Amy Krull is the owner of the large Yoda and the person responsible for the kidnapping.

Now you can't just go a grab your toy back after something like that. You have to do this kind of thing with a little style. So with that I give you Yoda's trip to the mall.

After a long and boring 3 day holiday weekend Yoda decides to go to the Bellevue mall. Mini me Yoda can't make the trip. It would take him a week to walk there. He only asks that Yoda bring him back an Orange Julius.

First to get out of the building:

Outside on a beautiful day and heading to the mall. A nice walk, Green Cars, maybe some new threads and some coffee:

Finally, the mall. Bling, kicks, games, a new deck, and a new friend w00t!

Time to grab some lunch and head back to the office.

What! You forgot my Orange Julius? You tried? Do or do not. There is no try. I'm out of here!

Here's How You Do The 4th of July: Backyard Ballistics

It's like the Anarchists Cookbook without the anarchy. Still fun, dangerous and enough to get you in trouble but just not arrested.

Found at Barnes and Nobles.

How I Survived 3 Days Unconnected

You can see here pictures of the my family's cabin that dates back to the early 1940's in the mountains of Idaho. The lake view we have, the forest behind the cabin and Jen reading to our kids out on the deck. We have electricity and running water but no TV, Internet or cell connection.

How did I survive being "unplugged" for three days? It wasn't actually all that tough as you can tell from the pictures :) And to be fair it wasn't a full 3 days. More like 2 1/2.

We have radio so I was able to listen to USA's loss to Ghana in the World Cup. After that I had very little interest in being connected. j/k

Besides spending time with my family, my main goal was to disconnect and get some writing done. I didn't get much done from a word count perspective but I think I had a major breakthrough on a problem I've been working through.

What was interesting though is when I found it time to get back I suddenly found myself getting anxious. There was a slight feeling of dread at what was waiting for me. Usually on the weekends I check mail maybe once or twice a day just so I know what I'm walking back to. An entire weekend plus most of Monday went by without me being able to make sure everything was okay. For all I knew the World could have ended, there could b e some unknown crisis at work or Twitter could be having more uptime problems :)

Rationally I knew this anxiety was stupid but there was a little bit of fear of the unknown happening. So I cheated. I checked my emails and then turned it all back off again. Work can wait until tomorrow.

Mashups, Remix, Zombies, Androids & Frankentein

I love bookstores. Not libraries so much but bookstores. Bookstores, Target and Costco are my anthropological snapshot into the collective pop-culture zeitgeist.

My current take-a-way is that the remix culture is about to go mainstream. Some would argue it is with works like Pride and Prejudice and Zombies but the remixing mashups are spreading like a zombie virus, it's jumping to other steampunk/horror/scifi themes and will soon jump beyond the classics. They'll largely stay based on public domain books for obvious reasons but this will rapidly diversify beyond niche fiction like swine-flu jumping from pigs to humans.

Also watch out for Frankenstien. Koontz has been rigging on this for a while but the Frankenstien as the ultimate mashup will become the new zombie.

Ransom Letter For My Kidnapped Lego Yoda Minifig

This is what happens when you leave the office for a week. The scary thing is they haven't even made any demands yet.

Subject: And I shall call him..."mini me"

Sorry, you’re not getting little Yoda back for a while…he’s been adopted.
