GenX FTW!!!
"A favorite argument among those who talk about the gap between Boomers, Gen X, and Gen Y is that the youngest demographic is more adept with technology. According to the survey results, that's just not true.
Gen X employees contribute to discussion forums and social networks just as much as their Gen Y counterparts. The use of blogs and wikis was either equal or different by just a couple percentage points.
But the most significant difference was not in usage stats. It was how effective employees are at getting new software to be accepted. 22% of Gen X said they felt they have the "clout in their organization" necessary to introduce new technology, while only 13% of those under 29 said the same."

The hard parts of social media work
Social media has been my primary job for 5 years. Granted those first few years it was alot more trying to sell people social so I could then do it but each year the work continues to increase. I'm now at the point where 8-10 hours each day is nothing but putting together social media strategies or implementing those strategies. Part of me thinks I have no reason to complain because I have everything I ever wanted. But there are a few things I didn't count on.
Not being able to tell anyone:
I get to work on some amazing projects with some amazing clients and I can't tell you about it. That's hard for me. But some of it is of strategic advantage to my clients and some of it just hasn't rolled out yet. I promise to share what I can.
Watching the fringe go main stream:
I've blogged about this before but every trend starts at the fringe and as it gains main stream acceptance it becomes watered down. When you join a trend on the fringe it can be painful to watch it go main stream.
Staying grounded:
I've blogged about this before to but when you live, eat and breathe this stuff you sometimes loose the ability (or interest) in talking about anything else. Dr's suffer from this as well, they become so specialized in what they do that they can't carry on conversations with non Dr's.
Knowing that it's all going to end:
Eventually social will just ne the way things are. In a few years I doubt we'll have social media specialists anymore. When that happens I wonder what a lot of us will do? Some have always been marketing or digital focused and they'll stay that way. Others will always be looking for the next big thing. I don't know what I'll do, I really don't.

Unplugged (for a while)
Things have been super bsuy at work. I've been busy before but this is a whole new level. The good news is that I LOVE the work I'm doing. The bad new is that makes it that much harder to find time to get away from it.
It's not in my nature to walk away from a chance to work on something cool and it's not in my nature to do something half-ass.
But I'm posting this as a reminder of why I need to unplug, for a while at least. I've still got a ton of work to do and I'm going to be working all weekend but right now, I'm right here.
Trying to visualize theory
Some people are gifted designers and artists. I am not. But I'm still visual and surprising tactile, especially for really hard vague ideas like theories.
This is one picture drawn during a brainstorm. For the people on the phone during the meeting someone took a picture and emailed it around. That photo then got emailed around some more. It surprised me how one grainy picture of a bad drawing with the right context behind it made my most far fetched ideas (somewhat) understandable.
I think as move past early adopters to early majority and the mainstream with socila media visualization is going to be a big deal.
